Block 2 Metamorphosis

Today we explored blocking a second section in the extract, this being the scene where the family collect together old scraps for Gregors meal.We had this idea of creating a sequence with tthis conveyer belt movement, so that the sequence had a focus/aim which was to add more food too the pile. Setting restrictions or rules can be extremely useful when creating physical theatre as it makes sure the movements centre on the purpose of the piece, rather than wandering away from our intentions. This is especially useful when working with extracts such as this, where the idea remains the same for a long period of time- in this it is adding food to the pile and the lines act as a list of food items.

The opening section I think has a good juxtaposition between the staccato movements which create the tilt of our bodies to opposite sides and the fluidity of my transition onto James' shoulders. I think this could easily be made more defined by seein each persons tilt as  separate beat, and following it by another beat where we move back together. If we punctuated this with vocalisation, either by creating a sound for throwing the food or the "whoosh" of our movements it could become a very strong clear sequence.

The sounds we used were supposed to reflect the uncomfortable feelings of the characters whilst Gregor was eating his food. The idea was to have Gregor appear to grab the food and then begin to make loud eating sounds. However, even with this I don't think the sound properly got across the emotion. Perhaps changing the vocalisation slightly and maybe adding in a nervous gesture alongside the sound would help this.

The transition at the end felt too staccato and wasn't supported by any strong rhythm or sound. I feel that a sudden transition would be much more effective as it would be smoother and contrast the staccato nature of some of the other moments in the play.
