Work and Emily Scene Revision
Emily Negative
Previously we had only worked with improvising for this
scene, so whilst we had some key movements we didn’t really have an
understanding of the flow of the conversation. Therefore we decided it would be
important to define some set phases of the scenes development for each of the
characters.

These helped to us to concentrate more on the accurateness
of gesture of the mask style, by providing markers to hit throughout the scene.
In some ways this reflects some of the things we learnt when looking at the
commedia style. In commedia, much of the work is improvised, but small moments and
ideas such as gimmies and tricks are already pre-set. In this case each of our
stages was an example of on objective which we would have to switch to at
different points of the stage. Furthermore, we also introduced a few trick like
moments, for example a moment when Jack put his hand on Emily’s as well as the
moment when he grabbed her arm.
Work Negative
We lengthened the time it takes for Jack to enter in the
second work scene, introducing moments when the Boss asks the other workers
where Jack is. We thought that this would, on the one hand, make it so that even
the audience were waiting for Jack, and therefore prevent them from having an
overly sympathetic view of Jack. We decided as a group that it was important
for the audience to be able to emphasise with Jack and the psychological
difficulties he must be facing alongside the negative scenes. But also that
this should not allow his behaviour to be perceived as acceptable, and prevent
audience from acknowledging that Jacks actions should be corrected.
Furthermore, we wanted to contrast the workers precise movements with Jacks in
order to show how his life is starting to break down. We chose to make Jacks
movements clumsy and rushed, reflecting how he is struggling to keep up with
the other workers. Finally we used the
rule of three that we learnt during our commedia work, trying to build up Jacks
irritation whilst the Boss asks if he’s okay. This ends with Jack not hurting
but lashing out in a way that is definitely not socially acceptable. We tried
to emphasise this by making the other workers stand, moving from the busy work
scene to the sudden silence- everyone’s focus on Jack.
